Discover Playa Blanca in Lanzarote

villa3Summer may have come to an end elsewhere in Europe but the sun loungers will be staying out in the Canaries.  As this Spanish set of islands located off the coast of Africa enjoy great weather all year round.  Making them the closest winter sun destination to countries such as the UK and Eire.

Lanzarote is located around four hours flying time from all major UK airports and is serviced by most of the leading cut price flight companies – such as Ryanair, Monarch and easyJet.  With return fares starting at around £150, depending of course on the time of year.

Passengers touch down at Lanzarote´s sole international airport at Arrecife.  Which is located around 3km outside of the capital city of the same name.  Before being transported onto the main resorts on the island; Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.  Holiday makers should note that there is no shuttle bus service connecting the airport with the resorts.  So the only way to transfer to their destination is via taxi or hire car.

Each resort has its own individual character but the fastest growing is Playa Blanca, which is located in the south of the island.   Until as recently as a decade ago Playa Blanca really was just a small sleepy fishing village.  But all of that has been changed by large scale development over the last ten years.

Which has transformed Playa Blanca into a bustling holiday destination.  Boasting the best beaches and the most consistent microclimate on the island.

Thanks to its recent construction accommodation here is very modern.  Four star hotels line the coastline whilst some of the most luxurious Lanzarote holiday villas can be found in and around the Rubicon Marina.  Which only opened for business in 2004 but which is now firmly established as a popular location with tourists – thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and wide choice of bars and restaurants.

Playa Blanca has long been the gateway to the neighbouring Canary Island of Fuerteventura.  And is also ideally located for anyone planning to visit Lanzarote´s number one tourist attraction – the Timanfaya Volcano Park.  Scene of a huge series of eruptions in the 18th century which carpeted much of the south of the island in lava.

Come nightfall most holiday makers head for the seafront promenade for a stroll.  Before picking from a wide range of restaurants arrayed along the shoreline.
